Relationships - The Story of Joseph

Read up Genesis 37 and 39 - 50 on the Story of Joseph

1. Do not allow sin to enter into your family relationships

Sin is passed down from one generation to another

Jacob's two wives, Leah and Rachel despised each other.

Genesis 29:30-31
Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years. When the LORD saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.

Leah was jealous of Rachel because Rachel was more loved by Jacob whereas, Rachel was jealous of Leah because Leah was having children for Jacob. Both of them were competing for Jacob's love.

The sin that existed between Rachel and Leah was Jealousy.

James 3:16
For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

This sin was passed down to their children and was amplified.

Although Rachel and Leah despised each other, they never inflict harm on each other. However, the jealousy in Joseph's brothers drove them to plot on killing him.

2. Do not gossip

Genesis 37:2
...and Joseph brought a bad report of them (his brothers) to his father.

We should not emulate how Joseph reported bad news about his brothers to Jacob.

Proverbs 16:28
A perverse person stirs up conflict,
and a gossip separates close friends.

Gossip ruins relationships demoralises the church.

We as a church must combat gossip. Without gossip, people will feel more welcomed, thus the church will grow.

Proverbs 18:8
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels;
they go down to the inmost parts.

Gossip causes deep down destruction in our heart.

It pollutes our heart and ruins relationships. Joseph's brothers despised him more because of the way he boasted about his dreams.

Words should instead encourage, build up, edify and bring positive criticism to one another.

God did not give up on Joseph's hard headed-ness. Joseph was thrown to Egypt and into prison. This was how God dealt with Joseph's pride.

No marriage or relationship can be successful without love

1 John 4:7
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

What is love??
Love is more than just a feeling, an attraction or a passionate drive.

Love is more than just action.

Love is a decision.

John 15:12
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

1 Corinthians 13:13
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Christian love is not basically a feeling; it is an act of the will.

Love means treating others the way God treats us.

Love is the manifestation of Christ-like behavior in a marriage or relationship.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres

1. Love is Patient
When you choose to be patient, you will respond in a positive in a negative situation.
Patience brings an internal calm during an external storm.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

2. Love is Kind

Ephesians 4:32
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Kindness is love in action.
Patience avoids a problem; kindness creates a blessing

Proverbs 3:3-4
Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.

3. Love is not Selfish

Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Philippians 2:3
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself

Love is never satisfied except in the welfare of others.
Choosing to love your mate will cause you to say ‘no’ to what you want, so that you can say ‘yes’ to what they need.

Many people spent countless of time, money and effort in wedding but didn’t prepare for their marriage!

Marriage is not a human invention but God’s idea.

The bible identifies three main purposes, why God ordain marriage

Man and woman were commanded to be ‘fruitful and multiply’ in Genesis 1:28.
God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone”. Marriage is for Companionship.
Sexual union. Sex is a gift from God, but can only be done in marriage, between husband and wife.

Proverbs 21:19 (NIV)
Better to live in a desert
than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.

Your decision determines your destiny.

Proverbs 18:22
He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the LORD.

There are 2 indications that help us to choose the right life partner.

1. Same Spiritual Convictions.

The Bible strongly urges Christian not to date non-Christians.

2 Corinthians 6:14-15
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belia? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

Your life partner should be someone that has similar spritual passion.
The place of agreement is the place of power (Amos 3:3)

2. A Mature Person.

Genesis 2:24
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

To the churches: HAVE REVERENCE for God. FEAR HIM. Do not treat His house like a market. Honour and worship Him. Repent and turn back to your FIRST LOVE.

Release of Demonic spirits: The enemy is pouring dark spirits of death, mammon, strife and sexual sins upon the earth. Year 2011 will see more death occur worldwide. Hunger will be no.2 reason, wiping another 1/6 of the world population.

Youth and children-the target of the enemy: Be aware of the media! Music videos that are satanic must be avoided because they contain symbols of the dark kingdom. They are empowered with MIND CONTROL spirits that will take over the mind so that you can no longer hear the Word of God nor make moral distinction between right and wrong! Take heed!

Let us pray against the powers of hypnosis or mind control through the modern influences such as the internet, television and modern technologies used by the enemy.

Abortion of babies: I saw rows and rows of baby cots in heaven. Babies kept coming in boxes! A spirit of murder has been poured out by the enemy, resulting in many abortions and killing of babies. It will double in 2011 and many youths will be used by the enemy to fall into this sin. As the babies cry, God's Hand slowly moves away from the earth. Abortion and baby-gendered killing will increase. God will strike many lands for this great sin. (more than 50 million babies will die this way)

Families under attack: Divorce rates around the world among Christians will escalate. Get serious, guard your homes and families from demonic influence through mass media and entertainment.

Many Christians not saved: I saw many Christians walking with chains tied to them. Chains of pride, arrogance, strife and the Lord says to them, "Go away, I do not know you, this celebration is not for you.' He closes the door to them. The people kept on knocking but the door remained closed. Then swarms of black locusts came upon them and they disappeared!

The Word of God is our sword. Many are without it and easily fall, defeated when attacked by the enemy. They retreat in fear and are easily destroyed by darkness. (Eph 6:10-18)

Choose your master! Do not please two masters. You will be destroyed in the end. (Luke 16:13)

Remember not to be lukewarm. (Rev 3:15-16) Do not delay, time is running out. The horn is ready to sound the start of war.

Love One Another

'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "And a second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." ( Matthew 22:37-40)
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." ( John 13:34-35)
"Whatever you want others to do for you, do so for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." ( Matthew 7:12)
"But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward in heaven will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men." ( Luke 6:35)
"Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many." ( Mark 10:43-45)
"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you." ( John 13:14-15)

What is sin?

Sin is the breaking of God's law. If God says "Do not lie" and you lie, then you have broken His law and sinned. When you sin, you offend God because it is His law that you have broken. Also, the reason God says to not lie, not cheat, etc., is because these laws reflect the moral purity of His nature. Therefore, the Law is a reflection of the character of God. It is wrong to lie because God cannot lie. It is wrong to steal because God cannot steal, etc. The moral law is not arbitrary. It is based on God's holiness.

The law, then, is a standard of moral purity. The Old Testament contains the Law of God. It is a perfect standard because it is God's standard. When we fail to keep the law, we sin. When we sin, we offend God. This offense against God results in a judgment. Laws are laws because they have penalties. There is no law without a penalty. Therefore, breaking God's law brings judgment which is separation from God. "But your sins have made a separation between you and your God," (Isaiah 59:2). And, "the wages of sin is death..." (Rom. 6:23). So, to sin, to break God's law, results in judgment. The judgment is known as damnation which is the righteous judgment of God upon the sinner. If God did not judge the sinner, then He is not upholding His holiness and he would be allowing sinners to go unpunished.

Of course, Jesus came to take our place and die for our sins (1 Pet. 2:24). This means that Jesus bore our sin in His body on the cross and paid for them. He took the judgment upon himself. This further means that anyone who trusts in what Jesus did on the cross will have his sins removed; he will be saved from God's future judgment.

So, replying to the question "What is sin?" is best answered by saying that it is breaking God's law. All people have sinned. Therefore, all people are under God's judgment -- except for those who've trusted in God's provision to escape that judgment.

Where are you? Are you in the place of God's judgment or of salvation in Christ?

This world can be a difficult place, a place where many of our friends and family members are troubled by the challenges of everyday life. And since we cannot always be certain who needs our help, we should strive to speak helpful words to all who cross our paths.

Genuine encouragement should never be confused with pity. God intends for His children to lead lives of abundance, joy, celebration, and praise-not lives of self-pity or regret. So we must guard ourselves against hosting (or joining) the "pity parties" that so often accompany difficult times. Instead, we must encourage each other to have faith-first in God and His only begotten Son-and then in our own abilities to use the talents God has given us for the furtherance of His kingdom and for the betterment of our own lives.

When you think about it, with God on your side you have every reason to be hopeful, and you have every reason to share your hopes with others. When you do, you will discover that hope, like other human emotions, is contagious. So do the world (and yourself) a favor: Look for the good in others and celebrate the good that you find. When you do, you'll be a powerful force of encouragement to your friends and family…and a worthy servant to your Creator.

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up,"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"

The disciples are contrasted with the youngster who brought what he had. They certainly had more resources than the boy, but they knew they didn't have enough, so they didn't give anything at all. The boy gave what little he had, and it made all the difference. If we offer nothing to God, He will have nothing to use. But He can take what little we have and turn it into something great.

In performing His miracles, Jesus usually preferred to work through people. Here He took what a young child offered and used it to accomplish one of the most spectacular miracles recorded in the Gospels. Age is no barrier to Christ. Never think you are too young or old to be of service to Him.

A few years ago, the banking empire Citicorp ran a series of billboards about money: “Money changes hands—just be sure it doesn’t change the rest of you!” and “If people say you’re made of money, you should work on your personality!” These ads gave a refreshingly new perspective on riches.
God also has a surprising spin on wealth. From His perspective, you can be “well off” when it comes to worldly treasures and yet be in dire poverty in your soul. Or you can be poor in terms of earthside stuff and be lavishly rich by God’s standards.
The distorting power of wealth reminds me of the story of the rich young ruler. After a discussion about eternal life, Jesus asked him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. Unfortunately, the man “went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions” (Mark 10:22). This prompted Jesus’ lesson to the disciples: “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” (v.23).
It’s not that Jesus is against wealth. It’s just that He is grieved by anything that we value more than Him. We can work hard and make money, but when those things are the main pursuit of life, then Jesus isn’t. Placing Him first and foremost in our lives is the key to true prosperity.

A quiet time is a daily time we set aside to be alone with God and to know Him through the bible and prayers.

The time spends alone with God should be the priority in our daily lives for 5 reasons:

1. We are created to have fellowship with God.Rev 3:20

2. Personal time with God was Jesus’ source of strength.Luke 5:16

3. To give devotion to God in our daily quiet time. Psalms 29:2

4. To get direction from God.Psalms 25:4-5

Conclusion

Mission Trip to Cambodia by Ps.Jacob

As this was my first mission trip, I really didn’t know what exactly to expect. However, I knew I wanted this mission trip to be an opportunity to serve God, especially going during the hottest season to concretely participate in God’s work. I also wanted God to open my eyes to the needs of this world and to be able to see it through God’s eyes. God answered my prayers in two different ways. Firstly, I was physically able to experience what life is like in a third world country. Going to the Chek village and Makak village, God has opened my eyes to the poor conditions so many people are living in. As I travelled by motorcycle and many times Samuel and Ps Savuth would bring me to different places in the city at night, I was able to see some poor children and youth staying overnight at the street, collecting plastic bottles and coca-cola cans in order to survive. It was a good reminder to me how blessed I am in Malaysia. Secondly, I was able to share His word to people who don’t know Him and people who need His word. I was informed that I needed to preach 8 sessions to leaders, pastor, new Christians and non-believers as well. By God’s grace, He has strengthened me and used me to lead 10 people to give their lives to the Lord Jesus in Makak village. God allowed me to see that sharing the gospel is not an impossible mission; it can be very easy if we depend on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

What I observed about the Cambodians is they are very shy but friendly people. They like to sit outside of the house and chat with the neighbour, whether they are in the city or village. I think this is something we cannot find in KL or even other towns in Malaysia. Something that really shocked me is the traffic condition in the city as Cambodians do not queue and wait. Even it is red light, people will still try to cross the road. Even it is one-way road people would still go against it despite the presence of policeman.

I sense that the spiritual condition in Cambodia is dominated by idolatry because there are thousands of temples scattered all over the country, whether in city or village. Maybe because of Khmer Rouge Regime, Cambodians seem to constantly living in fear and sadness. Thus, the gospel of hope and love is what they really need. I feel that it’s hard for them to really believe God the Father loves them.

The churches that I have visited are Fellowship of Hope in the city, Chek village and Makak village. The church facility is very simple but the people appreciate it a lot. They don’t need to have proper music equipments for worship, with just a guitar or traditional instruments they can start singing and praising God. Maybe because many of them cannot read, so they will sing lots of songs in order to help the members to remember God’s love and theology. The church building in Chek village is donated by US missionaries and they have proper place for gathering, but the church in Makak gather in a small house and there isn’t enough place for all members to enter the house for worship and some people have to sit outside the house during the worship.

There were a lot of ‘first times’ for me in this trip. It was my first time to travel around the city and village by using motorbike with 3 people. It was my first time to see a motorbike that can fetch 6-30 people. I’ve also never taught in a seminar before especially to leaders and pastor who are older and experienced than me. Because all these were novel experiences for me, they stressed me out and made me anxious at times, but it also helped me to focus on the Lord Jesus, knowing that I was not sharing about my word but His word, so my prayer would always be “Lord, let me preach Your word, not my word, let the hearers be edified and Your name be glorified”. This trip has been a good training for what I can do to serve God and reach out to people of all ages and backgrounds in the future.

CG01's Outing ~ Little Genting, Here We Come!

On 26th March 2010, CG01 decided to go to a faraway land in Ampang to witness the true beauty of Kuala Lumpur at night. With the glimpse of pictures posted by various spectators who were there, that alone fuelled us to find our way there and see for ourselves the magnificence of the view at... LITTLE GENTING!!!!!

We set off early in the evening at around 7 p.m.

We had to go through lots of challenges to get to our destination. However, praise God that we managed to arrive there safe and sound!

This time around, the outing coordinators, Zi Xin and Masoud, had organised a photo-taking competition. There were two categories of this competition; the funny photos and the most scenic photos. Those with cameras were eager to take the best shots of this place!

Halfway through our meals, the lights were dimmed and a “Happy Birthday” song was in the air. It was SING SIANG’s birthday!!! Wooohooo!!

We want to thank our new friends for joining us that night! Tee Hwei Boon, Vun Vui Kiat, Goh Siaw Ling and How Hui Sun!

Also, a special thanks goes to Clarence, Sammi and Melissa for providing us with the "additional" transport that we need that night. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

4 years ago, the barren grey concrete floors greeted us as a few of us walked up the dusty staircase to view the site where our sanctuary was to be. Frankly it did not make much impression on me. I stared around at the emptiness, at the dull sunlight filtering in through the grimy windows. But, luckily for us, God gave 2 pastors the vision and the will to pursue a slice of His kingdom. Boy, what a difference that makes!

Now, the dullness of the slabs have been replaced walls resonating with the praise that we offer up, the tiles bouncing off laughter and chatter every week from young people, bursting with energy and youthfulness, and the windows reflecting the people who gather each week to refresh themselves from the weariness of the world.

Just where would some of us be, had we not seen the black and red signboard as we drove pass the row of shop lots? Where would we be, had we not had friends introducing us here? Where would we be had we not had someone who had a vision and followed through, even though in the beginning there was nothing to see from it?

Now, I’m here to give thanks for the birth of GEPC, thankful that I am part of it, and thankful for all the blessings, the friends, the love, the satisfaction of being able to serve though it’s in small ways, thankful even for the heartaches because they make one grow and thankful for the training ground that is provided, thankful for all the years of tears, sweat, hard work that some had put in to nurture, to grow, to bring us to where we are now.

Happy, happy birthday, GEPC! Let’s cheer and push on for a year of exponential growth and abundance, May the good Lord bless and keep us.

The Broken Heart Of Man

A broken heart, it would be a daring statement to say that everybody suffers from one. But it will be true. Some suffer more from this syndrome, some suffer less. In this context, a broken heart does not refer to merely a relationship between a man and woman. But the basic cause of this hurt in our hearts is SIN.

Let’s start the story from the beginning and what place better than to start at the place where the earth and the human race first exist, Genesis.

Man was made in the image of God; therefore we have intellect, emotions, a will and personality. That is why we are able to reason, to have feelings, to have our own quirks and fancies, to be able to develop relationships. Have you often heard there is no perfect relationship in the world? Well, there is one, the relationship that exists between the Trinity.

However we would not be able to understand it. Sin mars the picture. Adam and Eve had no sin when they were created. They were created for eternity. They were supposed to live forever. Sin. When did that happen to Adam and Eve?
Genesis 3:1, The Fall
 Shame came into their lives: they were conscious of being naked and sewed fig leaves to cover their bodies.
 Fear came into their lives: afraid of meeting with God, they shifted the blame between one another.
 Order of the family was put into place.
 Death came into their lives.
 The Earth was cursed.
 Rejection: Adam and Eve were rejected, banished by God from the Garden of Eden.

These wounds if not healed will affect one’s relationship with God and everyone else. If we cannot have a good, clear relationship with God, we cannot have a good one with other people.

Some causes of broken hearts
 Childhood Trauma
A child feels the emotions of the mother, even in the womb, for example the mother thought about aborting the child, affecting the child’s emotions.
 Dysfunctional Families
Divorce, Remarriage, Affairs
 Abuse of any form
Physical, verbal, psychological, sexual
 Rejection
Robs one of self-esteem, self worth
 Chronic/Acute Illness
Could result in inferiority, wants to be in control of everything.
 Physically/Mentally challenged
Affect one’s behaviour, being aggressive or withdrawn.
 Accidents/Traumas
Cause unresolved grief.
 Abortion
 Involvement with the occult
Tarot Cards, Horoscopes, Mediums, Spirits
 Unrepentant Lifestyle

If we choose to disobey God in a particular area, we are going to get hurt in this area. We cannot play with fire and expect not to get burnt, in the same manner; we cannot play with sin and hope not to get hurt.

Thoughtfulness

Being considerate. Packing food for a friend who is staying in to study for his exam. Buying someone a meal at the end of the month. Helping a friend who needs transportation. Offering to babysit for your sister who would like to go out without the baby.

But sometimes it's in the routine, the every day things that we do. One may not even be aware that one's being thoughtful. Ministry time after the service went on for a bit tonight. There were not that many people who walked up to be ministered to, 2 maybe 3 persons. But another 2 or 3 did drift up to the front to be ministered to at random.

A thoughtful girl standing at the ready at the back of another, waiting to catch her if she falls. A thoughful guy, who was observant enough to step up as I was scanning the vicinity for one to stand behind a guy who stepped up to be ministered to.

I observed the thoughtful girl who stood there throughout the whole time, holding the tissue box at ready for those whose tears flow at the touch of the Holy Spirit.

I watched the thoughtful keyboardist playing throughout the time, willingly sacrificing her time to be ministered to.

I watched the thoughtful guy who carefully treaded about on the stage, plugging the mics out of their sockets to recoil the wire, I watched another who silently and carefully measure his steps as he brought the guitar and bass back into their room, I watched them slowly transport the mic stands, music stands and equipment back to their proper place, without so much as a thud or a thump. If I closed my eyes then, all I would hear would be the soothing sound of the keyboard. I would not be able to detect that there are people clearing up in the background. For this I was thankful to them for keeping the sounds to a minimum in order not to disturb the people just 2 whole feet away.

I was touched by their observance, by their willingness to spend the time, their thoughtfulness, for their deeds that no one may even remember, including themselves. But of which ministered to the hearts of the people at their point of need. So thank you church, for your thoughtfulness that ministered to my heart this evening.

Holy Matrimony

More than a year ago, 2 close friends decided to tie the knot, and they are now Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Liaw, officially our beloved Pastor of GEPC and his wife. Then the wheels were set in motion, I watched their wedding planner sit down with them to decide on the color theme for the wedding, the reservations, the wedding invitations, the cut off dates, the wedding photography, down to the pageboy’s suit. I watched their Officiating Minister, Rev. Koshy Thomas conduct their marriage counseling classes when he flies to Kuala Lumpur to minister to GEPC, All these took place well in advance, in the span of a year! At which point it reminded me of our Father who takes painstaking efforts to prepare a bride for His son. He takes note of the littlest details, down to the very minute of the time taken for the wedding procession to walk through the aisle and the colors of the ribbons that adorn the hair of the flower girl.

The ceremony started very (extremely!) early in the morning. The people involved, family and extended families, the bridesmaids, groomsmen, video crew, photographer, make-up artist were all up at the crack of dawn, oh no, wait! BEFORE the crack of dawn, it was still pitch black when we reached the bride’s home.
I saw the blushing bride having her hair teased into curls and her face freshly made up, every bit the radiant bride.
I watched the Mother of the Bride gently place the veil over her beloved daughter and gave her kiss that spoke volumes without saying a word, a kiss that encompasses all her blessings and hope for a marriage that will bring her daughter joy all the days of her life.

Then the groom and the groomsmen arrived. It is after all tradition that the groom and groomsmen must do “battle” for the bride.

The opponents: Sweet, gentle, ribbon and high heeled wearing satin dresses bridesmaid. That doesn’t sound so formidable until they hear the games and items devised for them to do before they even have the chance to cross the threshold of the bride’s front door! Lethal.

I watched (and laughed a lot!) at the groomsmen who did pirouettes. Yes, that is correct, 2 grown men pirouetting. All in the name of the mission to get the bride! Then, I saw the groom who hates to be part of all these games as reiterated many times throughout the months of the wedding preparation, willingly go door to door bearing a sign that says “I’m the bridegroom, please help me get my bride”, of which he had to get the neighbors to sign on it and give their addresses and home numbers!

I saw the groom, sweating in his white tuxedo answering a Bible quiz prepared, writing a song impromptu to sing to the bride, and singing with gusto at the bride’s door. Finally the hard won bride opened her door and received her groom.
The tea ceremony followed, the wedding couple will serve tea to their elders in deference and acknowledgement of them as such. Very apt in keeping to the commandment, “Thou shalt honor Thy parents.”
Thus the lovely bride is carried over the threshold of their bridal suite.

In a whirlwind, the bridal procession was herded (like sheep!) into cars and dropped onto the ceremony grounds.
We obligingly ran around to make sure all preparations were in order with the ground crew. (Ha!) We waited for the guests to arrive (nervously), for them to sign the guest book, give their best wishes, be given the order of service for the day, watched them take their places (glancing at the clock every other 5 minutes), walked up and down to ward off the energy stirred up by nervousness, and as the places were filled, the emcees took their places (now we’re all on tenterhooks!) and finally the bride arrived, nervously and shyly taking her place with her arm on her elder brother’s (man of the house) who will be giving her away.
A significant gesture that symbolizes that she is now passed over from her maiden home to that of her husband’s for protection and care.

As the ceremony reached it’s peak, the very part where the bride and groom exchange their vows and agree to care for and be there for each other in sickness and health, for poorer or richer, two words that bear the most significance, “I do” are uttered.

Two such simple words, yet carries such meaning, such commitment, such promise, such hope for a lifetime. The promise of all promises. The beginning of a journey no longer for one’s self, but a journey that doubles joy and divides sorrow. The end of “I” and the beginning of “we”. Such is the beginning of this couple’s path, which is strewn with blessings from all who love them.

Thanks to all who are praying fervently for Sis Shanen Yap. She is currently under medication to control inflammation and pain, and undergoing few tests and checkups. Pray that God will grant her continuous healing and sustenance, strength and restoration for her body. Please remember Ps Jacob in prayer as well that God will grant him wisdom, strength, good health and strong faith as he takes care of his wife. May God's love unite their hearts and strengthen their faith as they both go through this trial. Emmanuel.

Do keep our dear Sis. Shanen Yap, wife of our Pastor Jacob Liaw in prayers as she’s been admitted to the hospital due to arthritis. The blood report is not ideal. But let us trust in Him for the healing of our beloved sister, for Jesus is our Healer.

It was the major blast of the year 2009 when the long awaited couple have wedded on 26th December 2009.
The family of GEPC traveled down south from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bharu in 5 cars right after our Christmas service. The journey took us about 4 hours but we had great fellowship with one another in our respective cars.
We reached Pulai Spring Resort in JB about 5pm and the resort greeted us with its elegant and beautiful landscape and architecture.

Right after our arrival, we proceeded to the hall for our wedding ceremony rehearsal with the presence of the bride and bridegroom:

After the rehearsal, all of us proceeded to Jacob's house for... buffet dinner !!!

A God of possibilities ~ by Sis Joan Lim

This is a testimony of my past until when I was baptized last week.I only have the courage to tell now,as I know that God would want everyone to know what amazing things He had done in my life..

My dad ran away since I was very young,therefore I followed my mum's surname.I stayed with a guardian in Singapore since the age of 3 because my mum had to work,so she had no time to take care of me.As a child,I felt abandoned and depressed.

But thank God I went to an Adventist school when I was 7,that's when I first knew God.I was very close to Him,until when I was around 11/12 years old,when my pastor drowned at Tioman during a school trip there.At that age,I couldn't understand that death is part of life,I was very sad and disappointed.Probably that's when I started to drift further and further from God..

When I got to Secondary One,I was very rebellious.I chose to walk away from God and mixed with bad company,doing things I shouldn't have done.. I felt so ashamed and had no face to face God,so eventually I stopped praying and totally lived in denial..

All these while,my relationship with my mum was horrible.We only saw each other a few times a year.When I was around 13 or 14(I can't remember exactly when),she got married to an Indonesian guy(which is my step-dad now).My relationship with my mum got worse after that.Even though she took care of my financial needs,I still felt betrayed and very angry at her.I was left all alone to suffer in misery while she was happily married to someone else so far away.My dad abandoned me when I was very young,and now my mum.... Can you imagine how heart-breaking and abandoned I felt?

In 1998/1999 my step-dad went bankrupt.. Thank God my mum and step-dad turned to Christianity a few years later,and moved back to Malacca to stay.They changed a lot after that,but my relationship with my mum never got better as I still had hatred towards her.I thought that I could never forgive her..

Many years later,I happened to see a signboard (that's GEPC!),and decided to go and ''check it out"... My life has changed ever since then.. God took my hatred away,and deliver me from my miserable,painful,heart-breaking memories.He not only take those sad memories away and heal them,but use them for good as well.So that I can share my experience with others who are suffering from past memories,that God's power of deliverance,restoration and healing is there for them too.He took my miserable past and make it to be my greatest blessings now.I'm closer to my parents than ever before. =) I thank God for setting me free from my past,and to be able to forgive and love my parents again.I thank God for giving me back a loving family and a caring dad,something that I always thought impossible.Without God,all these wouldn't have happened...

Outing to OFB’s (Openhands Fellowship Berhad) House

On 31st October 2009, CG01 and CG04 had a combined cell group outing to OFB’s house where everyone participated actively in various fields, such as cooking, cleaning and managing the teens and children.

Before we started the activities, we had a short praise and worship session which involved the Openhands girls as well.

Then, we were separated into different ministries according to the tasks assigned beforehand. The different ministries included Teens, Children, Cooking and Cleaning Ministries.

For the Teens Ministry, Jasmine led a “Cell group-like” session where there were ice-breaker, sharing of testimony, sharing the Word of God and prayer. During testimony time, all the girls were very responsive as they were willing and ready to share their own testimonies as well to praise God. It was very encouraging to listen to their testimonies. The topic being shared on that day was “Who You Are In Christ”, where the objective was to strengthen their faith and their stand in God.

It was not only the teens who learnt something new on that day; the children had a lot of fun as well. Led by Chin, the children learnt about the Lord’s Prayer. Then, they were given angel pictures which had the Lord’s Prayer printed on. The children were asked to colour the angels and make wings for them. Overall, the children enjoyed colouring and making the wings for their angels.

In the Cleaning Ministry led by Jenn Hau, everyone did a great job in helping Pastor Anba with the cementing work and dismantling the bed frame. They also helped in carrying the new mattresses up to the individual bedrooms at the second floor of the house. The Cleaning Committee also helped in cleaning and mopping every room in the house. Great job guys!

Lastly, the Cooking Ministry led by Sh’n Yee lent a helping hand to Latha Sharmila as they prepared lunch for the girls and also the whole team. We had delicious Mee Goreng!

Overall, it was a very successful outing. Our team reached Openhand’s house on time and we left around 12.30p.m. Every activity was carried out smoothly and joyfully. It was very encouraging to witness the participation of every team member. They were willing to serve the girls (even Masoud helped in cooking the Mee Goreng!) and there were good cooperation and coordination among them. As for the girls, I could feel their joy of having us to spend time with them. They really appreciated our presence and help. Hence, it is good to have this kind of outing, because the best way to prove that God loves them is through our loving actions as Christians.

First off, this is my first time sharing in GEPC blog, so please bear with me for a few minutes :) Well, I think that most of you have actually seen me crying during church service (quite a lot if you come regularly). But I think this is the first time that I have to skip one of the cell group meetings because I really burst into tears and it was a disaster for me.

Here it goes..

My mum has a rare disease called scleroderma, where her skin will get harder as time goes by. Eventually, she will have difficulty in speaking and not as normal as a healthy old folk. The medication that she is taking right now will affect her kidney and liver function and slowly she will have other complications. And, I was given this privilege to go through it with my mum. Why did I say so?? I believe this is what God wants me to go through to know His plan.

I always thought that my mum will get well as long as she is under medication and follow a strict healthy lifestyle. In fact, medication does not help in stopping all the hardening process but only slows it down. I choose to ignore that part and I cling on to the hope that one day, my mum will get cured. So, my life goes on as a normal college student, probably get a job in KL after graduating from Nilai college, get married, have a family and so on... I assume that my parents will be there for me in all these events, and I want them to be there. So, I always thought that my mum will definitely make it there for me. But guys, I never know that I was in a wrong direction until something happened to my mum.

My mum is having all her check-ups and follow-up in Singapore Tan Tock Seng Hospital, so she needs to be there every 2 to 3 months. I thought this one would be as usual as every other one previously. Well, it wasn’t. She had hypertension on one of her main blood vessels that sent blood to lung. This was dangerous to her because she might seem asymptomatic, but things can become serious in short period of time. It is unpredictable. I went blank totally after hearing what the doctor had explained. The medicines and tests involved were super expensive, so the doctor recommended us to join a clinical trial drugs test, where all the tests and drugs regarding this complication were all free of charge. Well, to cut short the story, my mum was not fit for this drug test, because my mum's condition didn't allow her to join it.

Can you understand how I feel?? Being with my mum to go through all the tests to check whether she is fit for the clinical drug test is the hardest thing for me to do. I cannot imagine if my mum was to do it alone. I cannot imagine my mum had to bear with this herself for all this while, and she never complained anything to any of us. She would still wake up in the morning to make breakfast even though we were already grown up. She would still iron our clothes, wash our cloths... She never said a word. She is a bit slow in movement right now. There are certain things that I need to explain twice for her to understand. Her skin is getting harder.. Her life was not easy after having this disease. But... she never complained.

But my world fell apart. All this while, the things that are important to me, right now they doesn’t sound so important for me anymore. First thing I say to God, “Let me go back to my mum, I want to take care of her.” It doesn’t matter how successful my life can be if I can't have her in my life to share with. She is my life. That’s all I think. I was so regretful to take them for granted all this while. They never missed out on any stages of my life, and now, I cant afford to be the one absent from their life when they need one. It doesn’t mean that my mum will get cured if I go back to KK, but it will be too late to be with her if things get worst. EVERYTHING WILL BE JUST TOO LATE. I don’t want that to happen.

So, I repented to God and said, “I pray that everything will not be too late for me to realize, I am sorry Lord. I promise I will study hard for my course, but please let me go back to serve my parents.”

Well, I hope I did not make u cry. But I want to share one more thing with you all. I was actually given this privilege to pray with mum when we were in Singapore. Why? Because my mum has not been to church for a long time, but she allows me to pray for her every night before sleeping. Ya, that part really made me feel blessed. Prayer is the best thing we can do for our parents. I don’t have to hide in the room to pray for her, but I actually can pray with her... That alone makes me feel so privileged.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to say “Thank you”, “Sorry” or “I love you” to our parents, so why not say it now? Or even a hug can make the world different. We can do that easily to strangers, friends, but don’t forget about our parents. A simple call, a day off from work and spend time with them... you won’t missed a thing. Just simply chat about everything, here and there... You will realize that your parents are just so adorable. You can try to observe them, especially when they are doing or preparing things for you, if it is not the best thing that they can give you, they won't give you, unless this is the best that they can give.

Sounds similar??? Hm... it is God that I am talking about. If parents are giving their best for us, what more can you think about God? Yeah, God restores the broken relationship that I have with my parents. And God wanted that to happen in every of my relationships. Positions cannot give you tones of friends, but a genuine friendship can. I don’t have to be a millionaire for my parents to have better life, but a genuine relationship based on love is more than enough for them.

That’s all for my sharing. Actually I cried again when I typed this down. But, I hope I won’t make u flood your room... Kidding...

Jacob's Graduation

Our brother Jacob Liaw is graduating!

His graduation ceremony will be on the 16th October 2009.
His graduation dinner will be on the 15th of October 2009 (RM 27 per pax).

A little bit of history for us about the origin of this festival.

Moonlit Uprising

In the 14th century, the Han Chinese overthrew the Mongols in a carefully planned uprising. The success of this uprising lies in these little mooncakes. Small pastries with a secret message outlining the plan was hidden inside the pastries and distributed. Lantern wielding rebels distributed the pastries at night in a well disguised wedding celebration. As outlined in the secret message, the Han Chinese executed a surprise attack on the Mongols.
The full moon on the Mid Autumn Festival shone brightly on the pathways to guide the rebels through the maze of the palace. Since then, mooncakes and lanterns are used each year to honor the new dynasty.

Mooncake Festival this year falls on the 3rd of October. It’s a festival that is celebrated traditionally as the Mid-Autumn Festival. It’s a time when families gather together, have a merry feast and children enjoying themselves playing with candle lit lanterns and adults enjoying tete-a-tete over tea and dainty slices of mooncakes.
Much emphasis is placed on familial ties and bonding among friends.

Our event in conjunction with this happy occasion runs along these lines of building relationships and having connections with our friends as well! And it’s happening on this Saturday already, 26th of September! It’s so exciting; we’re going to have a drama, (which is quite the epic of the year, I might add!), great worship, and great sermon from a great man of God, great joy and excitement from our members, great people who just can’t wait to welcome you (Yes!! You!!), glorious food and of course, mooncakes! What is celebrating Mooncake Festival without mooncakes, aye?
